This week, I really wanted to focus on writing about the seniors in our lives. Making sure that those we love who are getting older are staying healthy is something that we really need to keep in mind. Often, those from the older generations will tend to be stubborn and not let us know when something is wrong or worry less about their health than they should. This means that you need to make sure that all of your loved ones are staying healthy, even if you think they are old enough to take care of themselves.
Something that needs to be remembered is that seniors cannot keep acting like they would when they were younger. While we fully support having a great attitude, sometimes the body just does not want to work the same as it used to. This is a horrible situation to be in, but it is a fact that many of us have to face. Keeping yourself healthy as you age is something that should be at the top of your priority list and you should encourage your older loved ones to do the same thing. Spending some time with them doing these activities is always a good idea, and will be beneficial to the both of you.
Bringing your elderly family and friends out and about is something that you should talk to them about doing. Even setting up a single day a week or a month may make a world of difference to their mental and physical health. If they can still get around on their own, then encourage them to spend some time with you if possible. It has been proven that having a buddy to work out with helps to motivate you so that you can do your best every time you are out.
Even if working out or walking around isn't something you can do, then there are other options for you and those you love. Bring your elderly family and friends into Wirth Chiropractic, in Greenville NC, and see just how much it can help their mobility and overall health. It has been proven that chiropractic care helps people with very few side effects, so there is nothing to lose. Come on in and see just how much better your senior loved ones feel after a spinal adjustment.

This week I want to talk about ways that you can try and reduce your pain levels without medication. While some of these will not work for everyone, there is nothing wrong with trying to do what you can. Pain is never fun to live with, so we wanted to give you a couple of options to try the next time you are hurting.
1. Stretch. Stretching may seem like the last thing you want to do if you are in pain, but it really does help a lot of people. If your muscles are sore, it may be because they are tight. Stretching helps to loosen your muscles and releases chemicals in your brain which will help you feel better. Try some gentle stretching the next time you start to feel a bit achy.
2. Shower or Bath. Getting in some water can really help your joints and muscles when you are having a bad day. If you don't like sinking down into a bath, or can't for medical reasons, then there is nothing wrong with getting into the shower and spending time with the water coming down onto you. If you want to spend a longer period of time in the shower, you can always try and get a chair that fits and sit there while enjoying the nice warm water as it relaxes you. Maybe try some candles or a diffuser to relax you even further through scent.
3. Nap. Although normally people will tell you to get up and work through whatever pain you are in, the truth is you may not always be able to. Only you know how you feel. If you are in too much pain to get up and move around, then don't. Take a few hours and lay down in a spot that is comfortable and maybe get a little more sleep. Hopefully you will wake up feeling a lot better.
4. Hydrate. One of the biggest problems that I personally have is not drinking enough water. Staying hydrated can help reduce the pain you feel and means that you can focus on other things that you need to do.
While these four things aren't cures to your pain, they certainly won't hurt you to try. Give them a shot and then come into Wirth Chiropractic to see just how much better we can make you feel.

A few years ago, a study was completed which found possible ties between spinal health and the vitamin D levels that are found in the human body. At the Washington University of St. Louis, a study was done involving 313 patients who were getting ready to undergo spinal fusion surgery. This is obviously not a small surgery to get, as anything in or near the spine is going to be dangerous. The thing that was most concerning to researchers is that fifty seven percent of patients had low enough levels of vitamin D to be considered deficient. The spinal fusion surgery requires the body to create new bone. Without appropriate levels of vitamin D, this may be difficult or nearly impossible to do.
When the study was presented in early 2015, there was some retaliation from the larger medical community for the results. They claimed that the 313 patients may have not been a large enough study group and that the fifty seven percent of people found to have this deficiency may have been a unique and special group. While we fully accept that this is a possibility, we also want our patients to have as much information at their disposal as possible. Many people come into chiropractic offices like Wirth because they do not want to risk surgery or medication. While we aren't saying we can prevent that from happening in one hundred percent of cases, we do want to always do our best to give you the most recent information so that you can do what you want with it.
With this new finding about vitamin D deficiency in people having to undergo a spinal fusion surgery, some doctors are calling for testing to be done in their patients that would be suggested for this procedure. Some chiropractors argue that appropriate levels of vitamin D may preempt the need for invasive surgeries, as it helps to promote healthy bone growth and many other wonderful things.
Here at Wirth Chiropractic in Greenville NC, we can't do bloodwork for you but we can certainly help you out in other ways. If you are suffering from back and neck pain but don't want to jump right to the thought of surgery, then come on in and see just how much a simple spinal adjustment can help you.

This week I wanted to talk about ways to keep yourself healthy that you may not think about in regards to chiropractic care. Many things can contribute to the wellbeing of your body and even though not all of them have to do with your joints or muscles, they are still extremely important. Here are a few things to think about when you are trying to lead a healthy lifestyle.
1. Volumes. Listening to music or the television at loud levels can be extremely dangerous to your body. This is true no matter how you listen as well. If you have a stereo system you should keep it down to a comfortable level. The closer the source of the sound gets to your ears, the more important this is. If you are listening with headphones, you should make sure that the volume is not too high. The most important time to think about the volume levels of whatever you are listening to is if you are using earbuds. These go inside the ears and can actually damage the hairs which help you to not only hear, but balance as well. The same goes for when you are around loud sounds such as power tools. Always be sure to have the proper ear protection for the volume levels you are around.
2. Diet. This one is always a biggie and is often the most difficult part of a healthy lifestyle to follow. Personally I know it is the hardest for me, as I love all things dairy. You can still enjoy most things you already like, but portion control is probably the hardest part of any diet. When you find food that tastes good, you want to eat as much of it as possible. However, this is only harming yourself in the long run. Cutting back on things like dairy, sweets, and carbs to make room for fruits and vegetables is something you should work towards.
Here at Wirth Chiropractic, in Greenville NC, we want all of you to be healthy. While our practice does focus on joints and muscles and bones, we know that those are only parts of the whole. Come into our office and we can discuss a lifestyle plan that works for you to keep you nice and healthy. It never hurts to be on the safe side when it comes to your health.

If you are anything like me, you have been in quite a bit of pain over the last couple of weeks. Due to the pressure changes from the two large hurricanes that have been rolling in, my joints have certainly been arguing with me quite a bit lately. My pain normally starts in my right knee since that is the one that has the worst arthritis, however it has recently morphed into a full body ache, including pain in my head. If you have been experiencing this, know that you are not alone in the struggle. In fact, you are far from it.
Many of us who have chronic disorders are more sensitive to changes in weather than others. For example, my mother who just recently had two knee replacements has been commenting on how her knees no longer hurt when it is supposed to rain, but her shoulder still does. It is confusing her, as most of her life she had severe arthritis in her knees and was honestly more reliable about rain forecasts than the local meteorologists were. I recently have been taking over that role, but it is certainly one that I did not want.
While scientists haven't actually figured out why exactly some of us can tell the weather by the amount of pain or type of pain we are in, they know that it has something to do with the pressure. It changes outside and somehow our joints reflect that difference. It really would be wonderful if we could figure out what exactly causes it, not just to help correct the pain, but to give more accurate weather forecasts. I don't know about you, but my knees have been right more times than the weather on television a few days out.
Experiencing that pain that we relate to rain is never a fun thing. It is tiring and can be frustrating, especially when large storms like these hurricanes have been rolling in. It can sometimes be incapacitating and that is definitely not a good thing. If you are in the path of one of these storms, it becomes even more dangerous. Here at Wirth, we wish everyone the best and hope all of your loved ones are safe in the wake of these horrific storms.

This week, I really wanted to focus on heat related issues. I don't know about you, but I have been sweating my skin off this week and wanted to remind everyone that there are some serious issues that can arise from ignoring what your body is telling you when it is super hot out. Having your body tell you that your temperature is too high is not something that you should mess around with, as heat related illnesses can be deadly. Sadly, there are too many instances where people try to tough out the heat for whatever reason and end up passing away because the human body can only take so much.
If you are a caregiver to someone who is very young or someone who is elderly, you need to pay special attention to these types of symptoms during the summer especially. Children often won't be able to tell you that something is wrong and the elderly often don't realize that they are at a higher risk. I know that my mother is a high risk for heat illnesses and she is extremely stubborn so she will very rarely complain about not feeling well. With people like this, you need to learn to read the signs so that they don't put themselves at a higher risk than they already are. This is also something that you need to pay attention to with people who are non-verbal or who have developmental disorders which may prevent them from letting you know when something is wrong.
Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are both terrifying disorders that need immediate medical attention. Making sure that you and those you care for are appropriately hydrated is something that you should always take extremely seriously. Many people forget about drinking more than usual during the summer and this can quickly turn into a serious medical issue if you aren't careful. Always pay attention to any sensation that is not normal and keep an eye on how much water you are drinking. It is suggested that you increase your liquid intake by at least twenty five percent during the summer and there is nothing wrong with making sure that you keep to that. Just be careful not to overhydrate, as that is also a serious medical issue that can occur. Listen to your body and you should be fine. Here at Wirth Chiropractic, we just want you to be safe!

This week I want to talk about doing the little things. Sometimes the little things can add up to the point where you are so overwhelmed you just want to stay in bed and take a nap instead. This is something that almost all of us go through and is nothing to be ashamed of. We just want you to know that there are ways to get past this and here are some of our favorites.
1. Make A List. Making a list may seem counterproductive because then you see the enormous amount of things that need to get done. Some people color code things to make it seem a little better. For example, all of the things that can be done in less than half an hour can be in blue. The things that need to get done quickly should be in red. Things that can be done on your way home from work can be put in green. Check off or cross out items once they are done and even give yourself a little treat once a whole color block is done. Having a list is actually extremely helpful.
2. Motivation Techniques. One of my favorite tactics is using motivational techniques. For example, there is a documentary on Netflix that I really want to watch but won't let myself until my work for the day is done. Using small things to reward yourself is actually one of the best ways to make sure things are done. Just be careful about using food or sweets as a reward, especially if you are trying to get yourself to go to the gym.
3. Talk It Out. Talking about how overwhelmed you are to a friend or family member is something that many people do but don't think about it as a helpful tool. Sometimes just explaining why you are so stressed can help. You should never keep things in if they really bother you and this is no exception.
Another thing that helps is just getting out of bed in the morning. That is always the first step and if that's all you can accomplish for the day then at least you know that you tried. If you can get to Wirth Chiropractic in Greenville NC, though, perhaps an adjustment may give you the pain relief and motivation you need to start tackling that list. Come in and give it a try!

This week I really want to talk about mental health. There have been multiple studies done which show that mental health and physical health are very connected, so here at Wirth we always try and keep our options open to help you with both. While there is no single cure to mental health issues, there are a couple of things that you can try which might help. Here are a few of them.
1. Take Some Time. Most doctors will tell you that you can beat mental health issues by getting up and getting out there, exercising, eating better, and all of the other things that many mental health issues prevent you from wanting to do. As such, we say that you shouldn't feel bad about taking some time away from everyone and everything else and just doing whatever it is that you need to do. If you need to drive somewhere and scream until you're exhausted, then go ahead. If you need to sit in your room and listen to music, you do that! As long as your activity is not hurting yourself or someone around you, you should never feel bad about taking some time to yourself.
2. Escape. Whatever this means to you, feel free to do it. If that means you need to take a day trip into the woods, go ahead. If you escape by reading corny fantasy books, you do just that. If you need to sit there and play some video games for a little while to get away from whatever is bothering you in the real world, then more power to you! Sometimes we all need a little escape.
3. Baby Steps. If your mental health has prevented you from doing things around the house and you feel overwhelmed, remember that Rome wasn't built in a day. Even if all you can manage today is washing one dish or folding a couple of clothes, then that's fine. Taking baby steps until everything is done is the perfect way of making sure that you don't have a relapse.
Although we are not mental health professionals, we do often see people who have mental health issues come through our office. Here at Wirth Chiropractic, in Greenville NC, we know that there is no shame in needing help and we will do everything we can to make you feel like yourself again.
