Now that it’s past New Year’s, it may seem a little less exciting trying to stick to those resolutions. It really is difficult to try and change your bad habits into good ones, especially if you have been following those bad ones for years. Here are a few tips for you to remember about keeping to your resolutions.
1. Don’t Get Discouraged. Everyone falters and cheats a little when working on their resolutions. The main thing for you to remember is not to get discouraged and give up. Realize what you did, why you shouldn’t have done it, and move past it. While this may be difficult, remember why you are doing this. You want to better yourself in some way, so be ready to hit a few bumps on that path.
2. Set Small Goals. If you are trying to lose weight, which is the most common resolution, set goals for yourself. The one thing to remember is to make sure they’re reasonable. You may want to lose sixty pounds and that’s great! You need to remember, though, that it won’t all come off at once. It may take much longer than you wanted. If you write on the calendar what weight you want to be by what date, you can get very discouraged when you hit a plateau or don’t reach that goal by that time. Everyone hits these goals differently. Don’t give up just because your body doesn’t want to be put on a strict schedule.
3. Stay Healthy. Depending on what your resolution is, you may be tempted to go about reaching this goal in a way that isn’t good for you. This is most commonly seen in weight loss goals as well. We want you to remember to stick to a healthy method of achieving your goal, even if it takes longer than you wanted it to. If you are worried about how you have been trying to reach your resolution, then please speak to a doctor about it to double check. Your health is the most important thing and you don’t want to reach your goal without being able to fully enjoy it.
This first month is often the hardest when it comes to regressing into your old ways. Stick with it and before you know it, you’ll be exactly where you wanted to be. Wirth Chiropractic believes in you!

This week I talked about quite a bit of stuff, but most of it had to do with winter. Although rain happens in all seasons, it has seemed like a rather rainy winter for me. Other than that, winter sports are certainly, well, winter based and New Year’s resolutions are focused around the day they are named for. I wanted to talk about winter for a very specific reason, and that is that winter can be difficult.
For many people, winter is the worst of the four seasons. This can be for a multitude of problems, but the point is that it is a very real issue for a great deal of those who are closest to us. Even some of us that are part of the Wirth family have problems around the winter that don’t seem to appear at any other time of the year. If you have this issue as well, please know that you are not alone.
I wrote about New Year’s resolutions earlier and, although I never make them myself, I have seen the good they can do for others. One of my good friends this year made one that was simple and lovely: Don’t lose hope. This, I think, is the most difficult resolution I have ever heard of. Yes, weight loss is difficult and so is giving up smoking, but hope is so much more difficult to track. You don’t get a bunch of marbles and try and hold onto all of them and have that be your hope. We don’t have people say “Yeah, I still have nine hope so I’m doing pretty well”. Hope is nearly impossible to quantify and so I am amazed that she has kept up with it. Once a day she will post something that happened that day that gave her hope for the future. I think that’s something we could all benefit from.
Winter can be tricky, but look at all the ones we have made it through. Even this winter, once it has passed, will be a new personal best for you. We will have made it into yet another spring, another time for rebirth and celebration. We can only hope that you will allow those of us here at Wirth to celebrate it with you. Come on in and let us join the party.

This week I wanted to talk to you about old injuries. Many of us have problems that stem from old incidents that were never correctly treated. Some of us had botched treatments, others simply never had the injury looked at for one reason or another. Whatever the cause of the injury, they can often stay with you for the rest of your life. For example, my mother broke her thumb in a car accident back in 1986 and it still hurts her off and on depending on the weather and if she has been using it a lot. She had it treated at the time and still has a brace for it, but over 30 years later it still troubles her. This is the reality for a great deal of us.
Old injuries are extremely tricky to try and work with because often the body has found a way to compensate for the weakness or damage that was done. This may be with excessive scar tissue or abnormalities in the bones surrounding the area. There may be permanent weakness in the location, but perhaps the muscles and tendons directly around that spot have become tense and cannot be relaxed. No matter what the reality of your old injury is, chiropractic care may help to ease some of the pain or damage that has been done.
With old injuries, they are already healed so they likely won’t ever be back to 100% unless extensive work is done to it. Many times when you hear of a hospital or doctor “re-breaking” a bone, this is why. It must be broken again to fix it correctly because of the way it healed the first time. However, chiropractic care may be able to help relax the muscles around the injury or strengthen the area to get you back to being able to use it almost normally. This can also help to relieve the pain that often accompanies these old injuries which can also help with usage.
If you have an old injury that didn’t heal quite right, come into Wirth Chiropractic and see what we can do to help you out. You never know until you try, so even if another doctor has said that nothing could be done, it’s worth a shot. Either way, you can get a nice adjustment out of the appointment so it’s going to be a win for you!

Sometimes we hear clients tell us that we won’t see them for a while. Rather often when we ask why, we get the response that they are pregnant. After we congratulate them, our next question is always, “Why would that stop you from coming”. People seem to have a misconception that anyone with certain medical conditions should not have chiropractic care, but this simply isn’t true. In fact, the people that are told they shouldn’t see a chiropractor are often the ones that will need the care the most. Pregnancy is no exception to this finding.
While a woman should always tell her chiropractor if she is pregnant or believes she may be pregnant, there’s no reason for her to stop coming. In fact, research has shown that chiropractic care during pregnancy can help reduce the pain levels that normally spike in a woman during this time. There is a great deal of pressure being put on the lower back when a woman carries, especially closer to the due date. This can cause sleeping problems, difficulty moving, and general irritability due to all of these factors. A specialized care regimen can help to combat at least some of these issues and may make the normal pregnancy symptoms just a little more tolerable.
When a woman is pregnant, she goes through many physical and mental changes. While most doctors will focus on the care of the child, it is important to remember that the woman carrying the baby needs to be taken care of as well. In order for the infant to be healthy, she must be as well. While chiropractic care can’t solve everything, it may be able to make it a little easier for her to deal with all of the other changes that come along with growing another tiny human inside of her.
Here at Wirth Chiropractic, we always want to help our clients regardless of age, gender, or medical situations. To us, pregnancy is a beautiful thing and we want to make sure that all involved parties are happy and healthy. If you are pregnant and in pain, we would be more than happy to have you in our office for help. After all, you need to be careful of taking anything while pregnant and chiropractic care doesn’t use medication. Come in and let us help you make this time of your life as easy as it can possibly be.

Oh yes, winter is finally upon us. Although there hasn’t been any snow in my area yet, many other people have been experiencing it. Just because there hasn’t been any snow doesn’t mean that the cold and the damp hasn’t begun to take a toll on you, though. Personally, as I am writing this, my left hand is hurting because of the temperature change. Maybe something has begun to hurt you more over the past few weeks. It isn’t uncommon as winter progresses to feel more pain than you do during the warmer months. In fact, more people are finding that they experience the same joint pain as the rest of us.
This pain that occurs during the changing of the seasons is one that people have complained about for centuries. It normally occurs in the hands and feet, and any other spots where circulation is lower than the center of the body. If you naturally have poor circulation or if you have a chronic disorder such as arthritis or fibromyalgia, the cold weather will likely affect you more as well. I know, as if you didn’t already have enough problems, right?
The change in moisture in the air before rain, freezing rain, sleet, snow, or ice can also cause discomfort. For those of us who are used to being able to use our joints as a forecast for precipitation may find this ability skewed or completely unreliable during the winter because there is often the chance in the air. Even if you are in an area that doesn’t receive a lot of rain or snow fall, the cold can also cause this inability to accurately predict when the weather will change. Winter is just about the only time I have to check the weather channel each morning to see what the day has in store.
Many people suggest the use of a fireplace if you have one to get the damp and cold out of the house. If this isn’t a possibility, the use of a heating pad or even a sock with uncooked microwaved rice can help. Stretching has also been shown to relieve some of the pain that weather changes and winter can bring. Come on into Wirth Chiropractic in Greenville and see just how much an adjustment can help you combat the aches that are experienced around this time of year!

For me, the holidays are always a fun time but a very stressful one as well. There is always so much to do and so many things to get and make and so many people to see it’s hard to fit it all into one month. I love being around those who I consider my friends and family, but after a while you just want them to go home so you can sleep. It can be enough to make anyone pull their hair out when you’re trying to find that perfect gift. So what can you do to help keep yourself from going bald overnight?

One of the first things that you should do is try to take a deep breath. It sounds silly, but it really can help. One of my favorite things to do when I’m stressed is to practice a breathing exercise where you slowly count to four. As you count, breathe in. Once you count to four, start over from one and hold your breath. Again, after reaching four start over and exhale for four, making sure that by the time you count to four all of the breath that you just took is gone. Do this a few times and see if it helps you because I know it’s the only thing that keeps me sane some days.

Another thing that you can and should do is take a day or two off. Spend a day wrapped up in a blanket with some hot chocolate and a good book and unplug from the world. Don’t check your Facebook or your emails for a few hours and lose yourself in a different world that you get to choose. Feel the warmth from the hot cocoa fill your stomach and curl up. Maybe take a nap. The day is yours, so do whatever you want to with it. After everything that you’ve done for everyone else, you deserve it.

Another great way to deal with stress is to come into Wirth Chiropractic for a spinal adjustment. Studies have shown that chiropractic care can reduce your stress levels and who are we to argue? Besides, we really want to see you because nothing makes us happier than knowing that you are happy.

This week I really wanted to focus on how much pressure we put on ourselves during the holiday season. Often we are so concerned with making sure it’s a great time for everyone else, we forget to take care of ourselves first. This is something that is so incredibly important to do at every time of the year, but especially around now. It can be dangerous to run yourself ragged no matter what the weather is like, but when it is cold like this people tend to get sick a little easier and I can tell you from experience that being super sick for the holidays is no fun at all.
It may be difficult, but make sure that you are still getting enough sleep. Between the lights outside and the running list of things that need to be done it can be difficult to turn off those thoughts and that worry long enough to get a full eight hours of rest, but you need to do all you can to accomplish this. After all, all of this worrying won’t matter if you exhaust yourself half way through the month. You need to be able to get through all of these days and you certainly won’t if you aren’t having a good night’s sleep.
Also, make sure that you are still getting up and moving. Nothing is more tempting than staying in bed under some blankets with a warm cup of cocoa and a good book when it is cold and snowing outside, but this isn’t good to do every day that you can. Make sure that you are still getting up and moving around during the winter, otherwise you won’t want to move when you really need to. It also isn’t good to stay still if you have a chronic pain issue. This is especially true in the winter when our joints tend to rebel just a little bit more.
If you are unsure about how to take good care of yourself during the holidays, come into Wirth and we can have a chat. Sometimes the holidays overtake us and we can’t think straight, but we will do all we can to get you back to your normal self so that you can enjoy this time of the year.

This week I really wanted to make sure that we talked about sleep. Now that it is around the holidays, there always seems like there is so much to do and so little time in which we can do it. This is why sleep is so incredibly important. If you get a good night’s rest, you should be able to get up and face the day instead of dreading it and hoping for a few more hours under your covers. Here were some of the tips that we mentioned to help you get better sleep this season.
1. Dark Rooms Are The Best. Although many people aren’t fans of the dark, having little to no light in your bedroom is the best way to make sure that your body isn’t distracted while you are trying to get to sleep. This is especially true when it comes to any electronics like televisions or cell phones. These give off blue light which disrupt the body’s natural sleep cycle so be sure to shut them off about an hour before you try to sleep.
2. Be Comfortable. While this may seem like an obvious tip, we mean in every manner. Make sure that your room is a comfortable temperature, have a mattress that is comfortable to sleep on and pillows that support your head without being too firm. Nothing will mess up your sleep like an overheating body or an uncomfortable bed. Make sure that you are cozy in your pajamas, whatever they may be, and that you don’t have to use the bathroom and are not going to bed hungry. If you tend to have indigestion at night, take some antacids and speak to your doctor about this, as this may also be something that is keeping you up during the night. Be sure to be comfortable and sleep should come a little easier.
If you are having trouble sleeping, come into Wirth Chiropractic for a spinal adjustment and see if that helps at all. You may also want to look into having a sleep study done to see if the issue is deeper than just your pillow or the television being left on. Hopefully you will come in the next time nice and refreshed!
