Did you know that according to the American Chiropractic Association that more than 20 million Americans experience osteoarthritis? Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that causes the cartilages between the bones to break down, causing pain, swelling, and even loss of motion.

Many people who experience osteoarthritis are females and are usually 65 years or older. The following causes could be by a family history, obesity, not exercising and previous joint injuries.

If you think you could be at risk or might be experiencing osteoarthritis, here are a few signs:

  • The feeling or sound of bones gliding together
  • Swelling or tenderness in the joints
  • Joint stiffness after sitting, sleeping, or not moving for a period of time

To help relieve some of the pain, exercising is the best treatment. Exercising daily helps strengthen the muscles allowing more mobility and function in the joints. Exercising may include walking, light weight training, stair climbing, and even water aerobics. While you are working out don’t push yourself to hard. Listen to your body and know when to stop.

Another route that you can take is chiropractic treatment. Here at Wirth Chiropractic, Dr. Wirth can detect degenerative changes in the joints and help relieve the pain, increasing joint function through different types of therapies. Dr. Wirth will also provide you with exercises that will help ease the pain.

Kinesiology taping was invented by a man named Kenzo Kase. It is a therapeutic way of correcting muscle function and joint movement without the use of a brace or cast. The tape works like a brace holding your muscles and joints in the proper position allowing your muscles to relax. The tape can be applied all over the body. Including your shoulders, neck, back, hamstrings and calves. Many athletes use Kinesio taping because the tape can be applied before, during and after activity so you are able to still perform at the same time preventing any further injury. Kinesio tape is latex free and waterproof so you are able to wear it more than a day. Kids and older aged patients should wear the tape for about a day. Middle-aged patients are able to wear it up to five days. If it starts to become irritated with a rash or redness take it off immediately.

Here at Wirth Chiropractic we use Kinesio taping everyday. From taping the neck and shoulders, to the lower back and calves. Patients are truly amazed with the outcome of the tape. Allowing them to sleep better, ease the pain, and on the way to a quicker recovery.

Everyone has whats called a spine. It runs all the way up and down your back. People tend to forget that you only have one, and there are no transplants for a new spine. So in order to keep it healthy you have to take care of it. So here are a few tips that you can do, given by the American Chiropractic Association, to a better spine:

Standing:

  • When standing, keep one foot slightly in front of the other, with your knees slightly bent. Doing this takes pressure off your low back.
  • Do not stand bent at the waist for a long period of time.

Lifting:

  • Avoid twisting while lifting. Twisting is one of the most dangerous movements for your spine, especially while lifting.
  • If the item is to heavy to lift, push it instead. Never lift with your back. Whenever possible lift or push with your legs.
  • Get someone to help you if the item is too heavy.

Sitting:

  • Keep your hips slightly lower than your knees, with your head up and back straight.
  • Avoid slouching, or rolling your shoulders forward.
  • Try to maintain the natural curve in your low back.

Reaching and Bending:

  • If the item is above shoulder level, get a stool. Reaching for an object can cause neck, back, and shoulder issues.
  • Do not bend over at the waist to pick up items from the floor or table.
  • Kneel down on one knee to pick the item up, with the other foot flat on the floor.
  • You can also bend at your knees, keeping the item close to the body, and lift with your legs.

Carrying:

  • Keep the item as close to your body as possible.

Healthy Diet and Exercise:

  • Extra weight puts strain on the spine.
  • Beer belly is the worst, putting unwanted pressure on the muscles, ligaments, and tendons in your low back.
  • Eat healthy.

Sleeping:

  • Sleeping on your back puts about 50 pounds of pressure on your spine.
  • Placing a pillow between your knees may reduce the pressure on your back.
  • Make sure you sleep in a position that your body likes and is not painful.

Quit Smoking:

  • Smokers heal slower when they experience back pain because the chemicals in tobacco smoke restrict the flow of blood to the tissues in and around your spine.

A lot of you may already know what Chiropractic is. Some of you may have no idea. Well for those who don’t know much about Chiropractic care it is a health care profession that focuses a lot on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system. Chiropractic treatment tends to, but are not limited to, neck pain, back pain, pain to the joints of the arms and legs, and even headaches.

Doctors of chiropractic practice a drug-free, hands on approach to healthcare. Chiropractors are also able to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises. Also, chiropractors can give you a nutritional, dietary, and lifestyle counseling.

One of the most common procedures done by a chiropractor is something called a spinal manipulation, which is also called a chiropractic adjustment. The reason for this procedure is to restore joint mobility by applying a controlled force into the joints that have become tissue injuries. Tissue injuries can be caused by various cases, lifting a heavy object, sitting in a awkward position for a long period of time without good posture, a slip and fall, or even a car accident that has given you whiplash or injured your body in some way. Injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that causes inflammation, pain, and diminished function. Performing an adjustment restores mobility, which will alleviate some of the pain and muscle tightness which will then allow the tissues to heal.

After an adjustment you may have a little bit of soreness or may become achy but in about 12 to 48 hours it should ease off. Chiropractic adjustment hardly ever causes discomfort.

Doctors of chiropractic may assess patients through clinical examination, laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging and other diagnostic interventions to determine whether chiropractic treatment is necessary.

Did you know living an active lifestyle could increase your chances of living longer and having more energy? Exercising is good for everyone, regardless of your sex, age, or physical ability. Here are a few ways exercise can improve your lifestyle:

-Exercising which everyone knows controls your weight. You burn calories, burn fat, and lose weight. As you are out doing your daily activities try making better decisions like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or eating something a little healthier instead of the very easy fast food restaurants.

-Exercising also helps preventing health conditions and diseases. Being active boosts high-density lipoprotein, which is good cholesterol and decreases unhealthy triglycerides. Doing physical activity helps prevent many health problems like stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression, arthritis, and even certain cancers.

-Being active also increases your mood. Have you ever been so stressed out or mad about something, you feel like you need to let off a little steam? Try going for a run on the treadmill or lift a few weights at the gym. You can even take a walk outside and enjoy the fresh air. Physical activity stimulates brain chemicals that can leave you feeling happier and more relaxed. You will also feel better about yourself and have more confidence.

-Exercising will also help you sleep at night. One thing you do not want to do would be to work out shortly before you are about to go to bed. Working out gets you energized and you may have to much energy to fall asleep.

-Does your sex drive happen to be a little down? Exercising leaves you feeling more confident and feeling better about yourself. Physical activity can lead to enhanced arousal for woman and men are less likely to have problems with erectile dysfunction.

-Exercising is also fun especially if you have a friend or family member to participate with you. It is a way to make new friends or bond with the friends and family you already have.

Daily physical activity and getting involved with Chiropractic treatment is also important in managing low back or neck pain. Exercising and chiropractic treatment helps strengthen the low back, promotes proper digestion, keeps the muscles in proper tone and promotes better circulation. Here at Wirth Chiropractic we demonstrate several exercises that help strengthen your lower back and even other areas that you may be experiencing problems. Call today and we will help you get back on the right track.

Here at Wirth Chiropractic we specialize in headaches, neck pain, back pain, and auto accidents. If you have never been to a chiropractor before, here at Wirth Chiropracic for your first visit of course you will have to fill out some paperwork.
