Everyone gets stressed. Normally people cite money issues and family problems as the most common reasons for stress, but there is not a single person that doesn’t feel stress about something at some point in their lives. While many people can manage their stress through techniques like breathing exercises or running, others have so much stress that it can overwhelm their lives. One great method for coping with stress, however, has everything to do with bringing something else into your home. I am of course talking about getting a pet.
Scientists have found that having a pet not only reduces your stress levels drastically, but as a result of that also reduces your risk of heart attack and stroke. The act of petting something soft has a natural calming effect, so it makes sense that inviting a furry friend into your home would help. This is especially true of people who rescue their pets from shelters or outside. They often state that their pets are one of the driving forces in their lives and for people with depression and similar mental health problems, they can literally be life savers.
If you are allergic to fur, there are options for you as well! There are certain breeds of dogs and cats that claim to be hypoallergenic, but it is always a good idea to try and find an animal of that breed to see if you have a reaction or not before you get one under the assumption that you’ll be fine. If this is not an option, even pets like reptiles and amphibians can help reduce your stress levels. I know a woman who has a snake due to her allergies, and she was recently able to get it registered as a support animal because of how much it has helped her anxiety since she rescued it. There are always options for other animals that may seem non-traditional if you cannot be around fur.
Pets can be an incredible addition to our family. If you have ever been around an animal that truly loves you, you know that there isn’t anything like it. If you are unsure about getting an animal, ask a friend who has a pet if you can go over and play with them for a while. Most people are thrilled to have someone else gush over their pet. You never know what you may fall in love with!

One of the most concerning things about the summer is the heat. The very young and the elderly are especially sensitive to changes in temperature, and heat can be just as dangerous as extreme cold to their health. Everyone, regardless of age, needs to be mindful of how much water they drink at any given time. This is because without the proper hydration, you can become extremely sick and the results can be deadly if not treated correctly.
We all grew up hearing that we should drink eight cups of water every day. According to The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, however, the actual amount is considerably higher. Women should be getting around 11.5 cups of water a day into their systems and men should have about 15.5. This means that women should have a daily water intake of over 2.5 liters each day and men over 3.5. That’s considerably more water than I ever heard when I was younger and many people haven’t heard these updated numbers either. While your daily fluid intake is all of the water absorbed each day through drinking and eating, this is still a relatively high number for many of us. It can be hard to reach that level, especially if we aren’t paying attention.
If you are concerned about making sure you are getting enough water, there are apps that you can use to track your daily water intake. This is especially beneficial to people with medical disorders or situations like pregnancy that require you to drink even more than the average recommended daily intake. If you don’t have a smart phone, or simply don’t want to download another app, then it is a good idea to keep a journal at least until you get used to drinking as much water as you should be having.
While it is always important to keep yourself hydrated, it is arguably even more important to do so during the summer. You can become dehydrated much faster in warmer temperatures and this can be dangerous for people of all ages. Be sure that if you’re going to be outside to take a water bottle with you, preferably with some ice to help keep it cold. You may have to use the bathroom a few more times than you’re used to, but it is well "Wirth" it to know that you are healthy!

This week I wanted to focus on getting outside. The weather is great during this time of the year (on the days it isn’t raining at least), so there’s no reason to stay inside and limit what you can do if you can help it. Unfortunately, we don’t always have the time to dedicate to sitting outside or even exercising given everything else we need to get done. Here are some ideas of things that you can do to get some exercise while still working on that to-do list:

  1. Clean Out The Garage. This is always one of the most imposing tasks on anyone’s list. No one wants to clean out the years of junk that seem to multiply on their own accord, especially when it’s a great day outside. If you open the garage door and put on some of your favorite music, however, it can be a rather enjoyable time! You might even want to invite a few friends over to help and then maybe grill some food to wrap up the day. That can give you an extra incentive to get some work done, too!
  2. Wash Your Cars/House. Getting your car washed during the summer is so important, especially if you live in an area where you hit a lot of bugs or pollen falls onto your car in high levels. There is also the issue of birds and their aim. Even your house can end up with a buildup of pollen, dirt, and algae depending on where you live. Although spending your day washing everything may not seem fun, I tend to pick hot days to do this so I don’t feel so bad when I “accidentally” turn the hose around and spray myself with that nice cool water.
  3. Mowing The Lawn. Anyone who has ever had to mow grass knows how much of a sweat it can work up. This means that it’s great exercise, and it’s something that needs to get done anyway! It’s also a great reason to take a long, cool shower once you’re finished!

There are tons of ways to get some exercise in with tasks you would have needed to completely anyway. Just remember to come into Wirth Chiropractic after doing them to get a spinal adjustment so that you feel even better later. You’ll be amazed at the difference it can make for you!

One of the most important things about the summer according to the media is to have a “beach body”. While the focus of this message is about losing weight, we think that any body that is healthy is a beach body. Unfortunately, a lot of us don’t have healthy bodies because of the things that we put into them. Eating nothing but chicken nuggets and mac and cheese isn’t healthy, no matter how much we wish it was. This is why the summer is such a great time to start a new diet, though!
Having a lot of heavy food, especially hot food, is normally not a great feeling in the summer. Normally we want something lighter and don’t look for comfort food quite as much as we do during the colder months. While there are still some times that cheesy pasta sounds good during the summer, you probably don’t want it for every other meal like most people do other times of the year. This means that fruits and veggies are a great alternative to heavy foods during these hot periods.
We often think of cookouts and barbeques when we think about food in the summer. There is certainly nothing wrong with having a burger or two with friends, but it is important to balance your meals. Have a couple of slices of watermelon first and see how full you get from smaller pieces of healthier food. Watermelon is also great for your hydration levels on those hot days in the sun, so look around for delicious options other than just meat.
Since most fruits and veggies are in season during the summer, the price of them go down. For example, I just bought five ears of corn for $2 and found watermelons for less than $2 a pound! Although it can be expensive to buy healthy foods during the winter, it is much easier to get them at a reasonable price around now as long as you look for sales.
Having a healthy diet, along with some exercise, means that you will have a healthy body. Another way to help your body is by coming into Wirth Chiropractic for a spinal adjustment every week. You will be amazed at how much better you feel after having it done, we can guarantee it! You never realize how much pain and tension you carry with you until it’s finally gone.

Many people think that chiropractors are only here to crack bones. Nothing can be farther from the truth. As chiropractors, yes, we do pop a lot of joints. However, there are dozens of other services we can provide as well! You need to remember that a chiropractor is a doctor just like anyone else who graduated from medical school. This means that we are able and certified to do a bunch of things that extend beyond what you may think of when you hear the word chiropractor.
For example, your chiropractor can give you guidance about your dietary habits. If you come to us stating that you want to lose weight, we can give you some ideas of how to eat correctly to accomplish your goal weight and measurements. Although we may not have the word “dietician” on the top of our business cards, we are still fully capable of letting you know what you should try and what you should change when it comes to food.
Another thing that we are always happy to do is create a personalized workout plan for you. One main cause of pain in the joints, especially the hips, knees, and ankles, is extra weight. While there may be other factors such as arthritis or nerve disorders, reducing your weight may also help to reduce the pressure that is placed upon your joints. It is true that muscle weighs more than fat, but the thing that really does matter is your personal fat percentage and the measurements of your body. If you feel like you are at an unhealthy weight or have been told by your doctors that you need to lose weight, we can help you work out a system that will help you get down to the appropriate weight for your height and age.
There are so many ways t hat we can help you beyond just cracking a couple of the bones in your back. We are dedicated to your entire body’s health and want you to know that. We will do everything we can to help you be the best you and we promise to be with you every step of the way. If you aren’t sure if we can help you with something, all you need to do is ask. Come into Wirth Chiropractic today and see how much of a difference we can make in your life!

This week I wanted to talk to you about stress. Stress is a huge problem in our society and it doesn’t show any signs of getting better. There is no one thing that causes stress, either. Often, it comes from more sources than we can name. Work, family, the news, all of these things are sources of stress for millions of people around the world. Thankfully, there are a few things that we can do to mitigate the stress. Here are some of them.
1. Get A Pet. Animals have been shown time and time again to help people reduce their stress. In fact, studies have shown that owning a cat may reduce the risk of stroke by a third and that the risk of cardiovascular disease also goes down when a pet is involved. Even if you are allergic to animals, the act of petting something soft can help to reduce stress. This can be anything from a piece of fake fur to a stuffed animal. Try a few different things out and see what works best for you.
2. Meditation and Yoga. Both of these things work wonders for many people who find themselves stressed out often. The breathing techniques that are taught can help reduce stress levels by allowing the correct amount of oxygen back into the system. The best thing about meditation is that anyone can do it regardless of any physical disabilities! It may take a little while for you to find what meditation techniques work the best for you, but you’re bound to find something sooner or later.
3. Have A Hobby. Sometimes, the best thing to do when you are stressed is to throw yourself into something else entirely. Some people play video games. Some people sew or bake. Others play music or write to get away from whatever causes them distress. Whatever it is that you like doing, stick with it when you’re feeling overwhelmed and you may be amazed at how much better you feel after a little while.
Handling stress isn’t an easy task by any stretch of the imagination. Some people may not have much time to try and deal with it and other may not know how. Whatever your experience with stress is, always be sure to try and remember to breathe. There are few things that you can’t get through if you try.

With spring flowing into summer now, many people are working on their “summer body”. While this is a noble undertaking, it can be extremely difficult if you wait until the last minute. Losing weight is not an easy task, no matter how you choose to go about it. Dieting normally means that you are giving up something you love while exercise leaves you tired and sore and can be dangerous if something goes wrong. This isn’t meant to put you off exercise, however. In fact, exercise is one of the best things you can do to not only lose weight, but lead a healthier life which should always be a goal of yours.
The wonderful thing about exercising is that there is something for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you are young, old, disabled, or able bodied. There are things that you can do no matter what your skill level is or what your body is capable of. While walking is often regarded as the best way to exercise, not everyone can do that. If you have an issue with your legs, you may be able to try swimming. If you cannot use them at all, you may still be able to lift weights. You can speak with any doctor and work out an exercise plan that is right for you instead of trying to do what everyone else does and possibly hurt yourself.
Even if you have never really been one for exercising, you can start small. You don’t have to be perfect at every form of exercise to begin with. In fact, you may need to start by walking only five or ten minutes a day. If you can manage that, however, you can slowly build up some endurance and muscle mass until you can walk as long or as far as you want. You may even want to try running once you get to a healthy point with walking. You never know how much you might enjoy it once you get going!
If you want to start exercising, come into Wirth Chiropractic and talk to one of the doctors. We can help design a personalized exercise plan for you that will make you feel better in no time. You can get adjusted while here so you are ready for whatever the gym may throw at you. You never know, you may just find that you like it!

This week, I wanted to talk mostly about methods to handle stress and about mental illness. These two things often go hand in hand and more often than not, chronic pain compounds the issues. Personally, I can tell you that this is true for me. Stress is always present in one form or another, but when you have a large amount of stress it can physically manifest into pains which is obviously never good. Statistically, people with chronic pain suffer from mental illness in larger numbers. You begin to see rather quickly how much of a vicious cycle these three things can be.
While it is never easy to get rid of stress, there are some things that we can do to help alleviate some of the symptoms. For me, more creative outlets have always been what works best. Things like writing, reading, singing, and even wood working can help me clear my mind and focus on the task at hand. Perhaps a nap is what works best for you. Maybe you like to doodle or even watch a mindless television show and just relax your muscles. As long as what you are doing is healthy and not harming yourself or someone else, then there’s nothing wrong with your method. After all, every person reacts to stress differently so it makes sense that something different will help get rid of it.
Mental health is something that we really need to speak about more, but we unfortunately don’t often have the resources to deal with this the way we do with something like a broken bone or blood disease. Mental illness can look different in each person, much like stress, and this unfortunately makes it more difficult to treat. However, we want to impress upon everyone the importance of seeking help if you believe something is wrong. The last thing that we want to hear is that you are unhappy due to something that you cannot control, such as the way that your brain produces certain chemicals.
Although we can’t solve everything, we want you to know that you are always welcome in Wirth. We love seeing you walk through the door because we know that no matter what else is going on, we can help at least one aspect of your life. Chiropractic care can help reduce pain which can help you to feel better. Come on in and let us help you relax, at least for a little while.
