Before heading out to your first chiropractic appointment, it’s critical that you have all your ducks in a row. Bring along any necessary paperwork, have a record of your medical history, and ensure that you have some form of payment for that day’s visit. We also encourage patients to come prepared with any questions that they may have, whether practical or administrative.

One thing that may not have crossed your mind, however, is the appropriate dress code. What should you wear to a chiropractic appointment? If you’re not very familiar with the practice, you may be hesitant when it comes to the matter of clothing. But never fear! Wirth Chiropractic is here to guide you through what you can expect so you know how to prepare.

First, it’s important to note that chiropractic is a very tactile practice. Rather than prescribing medication for pain, chiropractic address the root of the problem through physical adjustments and spinal manipulation. Patients will typically lie on a specialized table that allows the chiropractor to target certain areas of your spine, shoulders, and pelvis. With that in mind, here are some good rules of thumb when it comes to proper dress code:

  • Wear Breathable Clothing. Thin, stretchy material is the best thing you can wear to a chiropractic appointment. It allows for good range of motion, and the chiropractor will be better able to evaluate and address the problem areas. If you’re coming directly from the office or other formal environment, you may want to bring a change of clothes to make the process easier and more comfortable.
  • Bring Sensible Shoes. Avoid flip-flops, high heels, and anything else that may come off your foot. Low-profile sneakers, tennis shoes, or other similar styles with laces would be perfect.
  • Avoid Jewelry. Earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and other accessories can get in the way of the adjustment. Keep it casual and leave them at home.
  • Keep Your Hair Out of the Way. If you have long hair, keep it up and off your back as much as possible. This will make it easier for the chiropractor to work on your neck, shoulders, and spine.
  • Go Easy on the Makeup. Patients are often asked to lie face down on the adjustment table. Though there will be sanitary paper separating you from the table itself, heavy makeup may smear. Consider going lighter on the cosmetics, or ditch them altogether.
