The holidays are finally here! The time spent with friends and family is made all the more festive with seasonal decorations. ’Tis the season to grab the boxes, bins, and tubs from your attic or garage and add a little holiday cheer to your home. But decorating can take a significant toll on the body, not to mention the safety hazards that present themselves during and after the process. Wirth Chiropractic is here with some tips on how to keep you and your home safe this holiday season.
- Choose Supportive Footwear. Footwear may be the last thing on your mind, but it can be very helpful for those long hours on your feet. While winter boots may keep you warm in the cold temperatures, especially when outdoors, tennis shoes tend to be more supportive. Protect your back muscles and vertebrae by selecting the proper footwear.
- Avoid Bending & Reaching. Repetitive motion can cause strain in your back and limbs. As you begin decorating, place everything within easy reach to avoid having to bend or stretch beyond your limits.
- Practice Proper Lifting. Bend at the knees, not at the waist. When you lift, bring the weight straight up without turning or twisting. Keep the item close to your body for maximum support.
- Beware of Trips & Falls. Holiday decorating is particularly hazardous because of the cold weather conditions. Watch out for ice as you walk around outdoors, and get a spotter to hold your ladder steady as you hang the outdoor lights. But it’s not just the outdoors that can pose a safety hazard. Be on the lookout for electric cords, garlands, and strands of tinsel strewn on the floor that may get tangled and cause a bad fall.
- Drink Plenty of Water. When you’re really in the zone, it can be tough to slow down and remember the essentials, like water. Water is essential to your body’s function, and dehydration can lead to muscle stiffness. Carry a water bottle with you as you work, or grab a glass on your way through the kitchen.
- Take Breaks. Depending on how much you have to do, decorating can take hours or even days. Don’t forget to take breaks every now and then. Grab a glass of water, sit down, and give your muscles a chance to relax. You’ll be more energized and more alert after a few minutes of rest.
