This week, I really wanted to focus on what you can do during the heat of the summer because I know that I’m sweating bullets as I write this! It is almost eleven o’clock at night and it is still over ninety degrees with almost full humidity where I am. I have been struggling to keep myself healthy over the past few days due to the heat and wanted to remind people that there are some things that we can all do to help cool off even when it is so brutal.
Although it certainly isn’t the best thing to eat nutrition-wise, things like popsicles, Italian ice, and ice cream are great treats to help to cool yourself down. I don’t know about you, but I have been eating those bomb pops like crazy for the past few days. While it certainly seems patriotic, I know that it isn’t the best thing for me and I should stop. After all, everything in moderation. I don’t know about you, but I really need to stop buying treats like that.
The heat can be extremely oppressive for many people, especially if you grew up in an area or even at a time of year that was normally cooler than your current location. Having spent quite a bit of time up in New England, I can tell you now that it is always cooler up there than it is down here. I was also born during the winter, so I am more accustomed to the cool weather. This means that I need to make sure that I keep myself cool in the summer because it is easier for me to become overheated than most people that I know. Keeping hydrated and cool are the two most important things for me during the summer and I have to be very aware of what my body is telling me.
If you are older or if you are caring for younger children, you should definitely make sure that you know the signs of heat illness. These symptoms can be easily missed but heat illness is no joke. Falling sick due to the temperature is something that can be easily avoided and we hope that you will never experience coming down with one of these issues. Come into Wirth and see what else you may be able to do to keep yourself cool and healthy during these next few months.
