This week I want to focus on a slightly different form of wellness. While prevention is a major way to remain healthy, this is something you may not have previously thought of in regards to your health. I want to talk about ways to help prevent car accidents. Here are some ways that you can help to keep yourself safe on the road.
1. Always Be Aware of Your Surroundings. This is something that we are taught from a young driving age. We should always make sure that our mirrors are adjusted for optimal viewing and use them to their fullest potential. Continually scanning the road both in front of you and behind you can help you to prevent an accident if you see someone driving recklessly. This is also true of people driving alongside you, especially on the highway when someone may be trying to change lanes. Always do your best to eliminate your blind spots.
2. Watch Your Speed. Although this one seems obvious, it is also one of the main causes of accidents on the roads today. Cars are driving better and smoother than ever before and many of us get into the habit of keeping up with traffic. Always do your best to keep to the speed limit to help reduce the risk of an accident. It is also suggested to stay out of the “fast lane”, as you will likely have more ways to escape a crash if you can go either direction. Also, you will be less likely to be pulled over for speeding if you are not in the fast lane and doing the speed limit. It’s a double bonus!
3. Don’t Be Distracted! Distracted driving is one of the biggest issues facing today’s drivers. Although there is a stereotype that only younger people text and drive, this is not the truth. Distracted driving is also more than just texting. It can be talking, fiddling with the radio, yelling at the kids in the backseat, or any number of things. Do your best to reduce distractions and you will be less likely to be in an accident.
