This week I wanted to talk to you about old injuries. Many of us have problems that stem from old incidents that were never correctly treated. Some of us had botched treatments, others simply never had the injury looked at for one reason or another. Whatever the cause of the injury, they can often stay with you for the rest of your life. For example, my mother broke her thumb in a car accident back in 1986 and it still hurts her off and on depending on the weather and if she has been using it a lot. She had it treated at the time and still has a brace for it, but over 30 years later it still troubles her. This is the reality for a great deal of us.
Old injuries are extremely tricky to try and work with because often the body has found a way to compensate for the weakness or damage that was done. This may be with excessive scar tissue or abnormalities in the bones surrounding the area. There may be permanent weakness in the location, but perhaps the muscles and tendons directly around that spot have become tense and cannot be relaxed. No matter what the reality of your old injury is, chiropractic care may help to ease some of the pain or damage that has been done.
With old injuries, they are already healed so they likely won’t ever be back to 100% unless extensive work is done to it. Many times when you hear of a hospital or doctor “re-breaking” a bone, this is why. It must be broken again to fix it correctly because of the way it healed the first time. However, chiropractic care may be able to help relax the muscles around the injury or strengthen the area to get you back to being able to use it almost normally. This can also help to relieve the pain that often accompanies these old injuries which can also help with usage.
If you have an old injury that didn’t heal quite right, come into Wirth Chiropractic in Greenville, NC and see what we can do to help you out. You never know until you try, so even if another doctor has said that nothing could be done, it’s worth a shot. Either way, you can get a nice adjustment out of the appointment so it’s going to be a win for you!
