Ergonomics are a big part of ensuring that you get the most out of chiropractic care. The Cambridge Dictionary defines ergonomics as “The scientific study of people and their working conditions.” But ergonomic philosophies and ideals can be applied beyond the limited scope of the workplace. Think about all the ways you sit, stand, and move throughout the day and how it affects your body.
Consider, for example, driving an automobile. Whether you use your car every day to commute to work or only every so often to run errands, this represents a significant amount of time sitting in one place. Fortunately, most modern vehicles are highly customizable, so you must take the time to set up your cab to support your long-term chiropractic goals. Read on for a few tips and tricks to maintain good posture and avoid strain while driving.
- If your vehicle has a seat height adjustment feature, be sure to start here. Make sure the driver’s seat sits high enough that you can comfortably see out the windshield without straining your neck. You should also be able to rest both feet flat on the ground while looking straight ahead.
- The forward and backward movement of the seat itself is important to accommodate people of varying heights. You should adjust the position so that your feet rest comfortably on the pedals. People with longer legs may want to push their seat toward the rear, and those with shorter legs will want to be closer to the steering wheel.
- Seat Back. The seat back supports your spine while driving. Allow a slight recline in the angle of your seat back to support the natural curvature of your vertebrae. However, you should avoid reclining your seat back too far, as this may result in hunched shoulders and strained muscles.
- Steering Wheel. Once your chair is in position, adjust the steering wheel angle and position. You must be able to see the dashboard at a glance, and you should be able to reach the wheel without stretching your arms, keeping your wrists and elbows relaxed.
- After everything is in place, adjust your rearview and sideview mirrors for maximum visibility. The goal is to provide a clear view of the area surrounding your vehicle without having to strain your neck. Take a moment to fine-tune and readjust the mirrors every time you start up your car.
