I don’t know about you, but I despise having to take pain medication. I’m not sure if it’s because of the way I was brought up, a desire not to become dependent upon them, or just my genetics, but I do not enjoy taking pain pills. While I know that sometimes it is unavoidable, I have always preferred to wait it out. Although it may sound hypocritical, I do not suggest this habit to anyone else. If, however, you do not take pain medicine for any number of reasons, there are other ways which you can try and alleviate the pain you may feel.
1. Exercise. Even though it may be extremely difficult to get moving, exercise is one of the best ways to get your joints and muscles loose and help your body reduce the amount of pain it feels. I always start by stretching and then work my way up. Depending upon the day I will either work on the spot that hurts or I will avoid it, it really is a case by case basis. Exercising, however, not only allows you to work out any aches and pains in your muscles but has a tendency to make you feel better in general. The release of endorphins that exercise provides can also help your mental health, which is something that needs attention when it comes to those with chronic conditions.
2. Relax. Sometimes, not much will help pain but sitting down and breathing through it. Although this may seem like a ridiculous bit of advice, sometimes the most simple reaction is all that we have. Try different breathing exercises and see which one works best for you. Meditation has been known to help people immensely as well, so don’t be afraid to give it a try.
