This week I want to talk to you about safety outdoors. The summer brings its own unique dangers that we don’t have to deal with in almost any other seasons. While this can be said of basically each season, some of the issues are worse this year than usual. There are many things that we need to worry about in regards to the hotter months that we often forget until they roll around again or until the issues happen to us. Here are a couple of the things you need to remember in order to stay healthy.
1. Sunscreen! I cannot stress this one enough! If you are outside for almost any amount of time during the summer, it is a good idea to wear sunscreen. It doesn’t matter if it is overcast or if you expect to be under some kind of shelter for most of the day, you need to have sunscreen on. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the U.S. and most cases are completely avoidable. Make sure that you have on sunscreen that is UVA and UVB covered and has an appropriate SPF number. While SPF 30 does cover most of the UVA rays, we suggest finding some that is at least SPF 50, or higher depending on what your doctor says.
2. Bug Spray. If you are spending time outside, especially in the woods or uncut grass, you are going to want bug spray. Ticks are especially bad this year and can carry a slew of diseases that you definitely do not want to get. Find bug spray that has DEET in it and be sure to spray your shoes to have the best chance of avoiding ticks. It also helps to cut down on your chances of getting bit by mosquitos, which have their own issues.
We know that the summer is a time for fun and catching up with friends, but it can also be dangerous if you don’t take the proper precautions. As long as you protect yourself in the right ways, you can have a great time no matter what you like to do in the warmer months. Just make sure that you do your best to prevent any unnecessary damage to yourself in order to have a great time doing whatever it is that you love! Come in to Wirth Chiropractic today!
