Weight is something the vast majority of Americans battle with on a daily basis. Most of us go to the doctor and are told “Okay, everything’s good, just lose some weight” even if we feel like we are thin enough. While it can be disheartening to be told this, we do always want to listen to our doctors. Well, one thing you can do is go to a different doctor. I don’t mean for a second opinion, but I’m talking about a chiropractor. Chiropractors are also doctors, despite what many people tend to think. They go through medical school as well, but instead of learning all the things your GP or a surgeon learns, they focus on the musculoskeletal system and how to manipulate it so you feel better. In a lot of ways, chiropractic care and weight loss go hand in hand.
First off, weight can wreak havoc on your joints. This is what chiropractors attempt to fix when they adjust your spine and other areas. With added weight, more pressure comes onto your joints and can cause more pain than you would normally have. This is one of the main reasons many people stop exercising when trying to lose weight. Pain is a powerful motivator and often that motivator causes us to reject doing something that may be necessary because it hurts too much to engage in that activity.
While there are pain killers and other medications which can help you lose weight, these bring about their own concerns. Most diet pills have not been FDA approved and those that are have terrifying side effects, up to and including suicidal thoughts and actions. Chiropractic care does not use medication or injections, only the realignment of joints and bones to ease pain and suffering. This means that there are no drug side effects and very few side effects in general. Some people report a tingling or odd feeling, but these go away and are explained as the bones going back where they belong.
Some chiropractors deal specifically with those who are overweight. Although there is no specific training for this, doctors are taught how to adjust those of any size, weight, or age. Make sure that you find a chiropractor that you are comfortable with and see just how big a difference it can make in your life.
