Car accidents are an incredible scary thing to deal with. Unfortunately, it is predicted that the average driver will be in around three or four accidents over the course of their life. If you have ever been in an accident you will know how stressful they can be, and that is even before the insurance companies get involved. Hopefully you will be able to walk away unharmed, but often people are not quite so lucky.
Over 37,000 people die in the United States each year in car accidents. This number, naturally, is higher globally. An average of 3,287 people are killed around the world in car accidents each day. This equates to around 1.3 million fatalities each year. This means that 2.2 percent of all deaths around the world each year are a result of a car accident. In fact, it is predicted that if nothing is done to change these patterns, car accidents will be the fifth leading cause of death around the world by the year 2030. This is only in another thirteen years. It is currently the leading cause of death in healthy Americans traveling abroad.
The truly sad reality is how many young people are killed each year by car accidents. Nearly 8,000 people are killed in America that are between the ages of sixteen and twenty every year. Over 1,600 children under the age of fifteen are killed in addition to this previous number. Globally, crashes are the leading cause of death for those between fifteen and twenty nine and the second leading cause of death for those between five and fourteen. As if this weren’t bad enough, we haven’t even touched upon those who are injured and not killed annually. Worldwide, this number is between twenty and fifty million.
Although against these statistics it may seem that those who survive car accidents are lucky, those who are severely injured normally don’t feel terribly lucky.
